Awards are funny things in our trade. Nobody picks a plumber because of a badge on a website, and rightly so. What people actually want to know is whether you’ll turn up when you said you would, whether you’ll be straight with them about what the job needs, and whether you’ll leave the kitchen the way you found it.
So when the Quality Business Awards named Lime Heating the best plumbing company in Milton Keynes for 2025, what pleased us most wasn’t the trophy. It was what the award is based on.
The Quality Business Awards assess companies on service quality, reputation, customer satisfaction and consistency. In other words, it isn’t something you enter and hope for. It comes from what customers say about you over time, which makes it the closest thing our industry has to an honest verdict.
That verdict covered everything we do, from routine boiler servicing and plumbing repairs to heating installations and emergency call-outs. And it came at the end of a year in which we were busier than we’ve ever been.
Here’s what that year looked like, what we’re doing with the year ahead, and what we think you should be looking for in a plumber whether you choose us or not.
Named best plumbing company in Milton Keynes for 2025
Lime Heating started as the gas and plumbing side of an established electrical business, and grew out of a simple problem: customers kept asking for plumbing and heating work of the same standard they were already getting elsewhere, and there weren’t enough people doing it properly.
That’s still the whole idea. Do the job right, explain it clearly, charge fairly.
We’re going to be covering:
- What the award actually measures
- What we delivered in 2025
- Why customers choose Lime Heating
- Who we work with across Milton Keynes
- What to look for in a plumber or heating engineer
- Our goals for the year ahead
What the award actually measures
Plenty of trade awards are essentially paid advertising. You enter, you pay a fee, you get a logo for your van.
The Quality Business Awards work differently, which is why this one meant something to us. Businesses are assessed on independent criteria rather than self-nominated claims, with weight given to review consistency, customer satisfaction and whether standards hold up over time rather than on one good month.
That last part is the one we care about. Anyone can do one brilliant job. Doing the same job to the same standard in November, in January, on a Friday afternoon when the phone hasn’t stopped, is considerably harder.
Being recognised for consistency across plumbing, heating, boiler work and emergency call-outs was the part that made it feel earned.

What we delivered in 2025
Last year was a period of real growth, and our team supported hundreds of customers across Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas.
Some of what that involved:
- A high volume of annual boiler servicing visits, helping households improve efficiency and avoid breakdowns before they happened
- Boiler repairs and full installations for homeowners, landlords and letting agents
- Fast emergency plumbing support when people needed someone the same day
- A steady stream of five-star reviews, with punctuality, clear communication and tidy workmanship coming up again and again
The servicing figure is the one we’d draw attention to, because it’s the least glamorous and the most useful.
An annual service is the difference between a small fault being caught in October and a cold house in January. The Energy Saving Trust recommends one every year for exactly that reason, and if you’re a landlord it isn’t optional, it’s the law.
We’d say the same thing even if we weren’t the ones doing it. A serviced boiler costs less to run, lasts longer, and keeps its manufacturer warranty intact.
The emergency work told its own story. Burst pipes and boiler failures don’t keep office hours, and a significant share of last year’s urgent call-outs came in during cold snaps, when a house without heating stops being an inconvenience and starts being a genuine problem. Getting to those quickly meant rearranging plenty of diaries, and it’s a large part of why we’re expanding the team.

Why customers choose Lime Heating
When people search for plumbers in Milton Keynes, they’re generally after three things: reliability, transparency and someone who actually knows what they’re doing.
What customers tell us matters most:
- We’re a local business with genuine knowledge of the area, not a national call centre passing your job to whoever’s nearest
- All work is carried out by qualified, experienced and Gas Safe registered engineers
- We give honest advice and won’t sell you a new boiler when a repair will do
- We cover plumbing, heating, boiler servicing, repairs and installations, so one call handles it
- We respond quickly and keep you informed from first contact to job completion
The third point is the one we’d defend hardest. There’s money in replacing things that don’t need replacing, and there’s a version of this trade that runs on exactly that.
We’ve written before about when a boiler is genuinely beyond repair, and the short version is that a well-serviced boiler under ten years old with a minor fault is usually worth fixing. If one of our engineers tells you otherwise, they’ll show you why.
That approach is slower to build a business on. It’s also why the reviews look the way they do.

Who we work with across Milton Keynes
Most of our work falls into three groups, and each wants something slightly different from us.
Homeowners make up the bulk of it. Annual boiler services, radiators that won’t heat up, leaking taps, new bathrooms, the boiler that chose Christmas Eve to pack in. Usually the priority is a clear explanation and a price that doesn’t move once work starts.
Landlords and letting agents need compliance more than anything else. Every rented property with gas appliances requires an annual Gas Safety Record, carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and it’s a legal duty rather than best practice. Managing that across a portfolio is largely a diary problem, so we work to agreed schedules and get certificates over quickly. A lot of our agent work came through word of mouth last year, which we’d like to think says something.
Businesses tend to want minimum disruption. Commercial heating and plumbing faults cost money by the hour, so we’ll work around opening times where we can.
Whichever group you’re in, the process is the same. We’ll look at the job, tell you what it needs, and give you a free, no-obligation quote before anything starts. If it’s something you could reasonably sort yourself, we’ll tell you that too, which is a subject we’ve covered before in our guide on whether to DIY or call a plumber.

What to look for in a plumber or heating engineer
We’d rather you chose the right person than simply chose us, so here’s what’s worth checking before anyone works on your home.
Gas Safe registration is non-negotiable. By law, anyone working on gas appliances in the UK must be on the Gas Safe Register. Every engineer carries an ID card with a licence number, and you’re entitled to ask to see it. You can verify any business or engineer yourself through the Gas Safe Register and the HSE explains how the check works. If someone can’t produce a card, don’t let them start.
Ask what the quote includes. Parts, labour, call-out, VAT. A low headline figure that doesn’t cover the call-out isn’t a low figure.
Check the reviews properly. Not the star rating, the content. Look for repeated mentions of turning up on time and clearing up afterwards, because those are the things that separate a decent job from an ordeal.
Ask about warranty and guarantees. On a new boiler installation, manufacturer warranties can run up to ten years, but many require annual servicing to stay valid.
Be wary of pressure. A good engineer will explain the options and let you think. If you’re being pushed toward the most expensive one on the spot, that tells you something.
None of that is specific to us. It’s just what we’d tell a friend.

Our goals for the year ahead
Winning something is a poor reason to stand still, so here’s what we’re working on.
Growing the team. We’re continuing to invest in skilled plumbers and heating engineers so we can support more homes and businesses across Milton Keynes without service standards slipping. We’re also hiring additional office support to keep response times quick through the busy winter months, because a brilliant engineer is no use if nobody answers the phone.
Holding the standard. The award and the reviews came from consistency, and consistency is something you have to keep earning. That means the same approach on the hundredth boiler service as the first.
Becoming a genuine one-stop solution. In 2025 we helped launch Lime Electrical, and we’ll be working alongside them going forward. For homeowners mid-renovation, and for letting agents and private landlords juggling compliance across a portfolio, being able to sort plumbing, heating and electrical work through people who talk to each other saves a considerable amount of hassle.
We’ve also expanded our Lime Care plans, which spread the cost of servicing and cover across the year rather than landing as one bill. There are three tiers, starting at £9.99 a month, so you can pick the level of cover that actually suits your boiler and your budget rather than paying for protection you’ll never use.
None of these goals involve becoming a bigger, more anonymous operation. The reason people call us is that they get a local team who know the area and answer the phone, and that’s worth protecting as we grow.
